The Terezín Memorial was established in 1947 on the initiative of the Czechoslovakian government as a “Memorial to National Suffering” and is now the only institution of its kind in the Czech Republic. Originally built as a fortress town, Terezín functioned as a concentration camp from 1941 to 1945. The Small Fortress, which was used as a Gestapo prison, is located about one kilometer from the city. The memorial serves as a memorial to the many victims of Nazi racism and tyranny. At the same time, it fulfills a research and educational mission. The buildings and memorial sites accessible to the museum include the Small Fortress with the National Cemetery, the Ghetto Museum, the Magdeburg Barracks, the prayer room from the ghetto period, the Jewish Cemetery with crematorium, the Russian Cemetery, the Soviet Soldiers' Cemetery, the memorial plaque at the railroad siding, the memorial site on the Eger River, the columbarium with part of the bulwark wall, the burial room and the central mortuary.
