Altzella, one of the most important Cistercian monasteries in Central Germany, was in existence from 1162 to 1540. It was founded by the margrave Otto von Meissen.
The extant buildings – such as the Converses’ House with the monks’ refectory and an impressive library – and the ruins still bear witness to the former importance of the monastery, as well as to the Cistercians’ architectural skills.
The monastery park is Romantic in spirit. “Back to Nature” was the principle underlying the design which, commissioned by the Elector, aimed to create an atmospheric setting for the mausoleum built around 1787 in the Neoclassical style as a burial place for members of the Wettin dynasty.
